If you couldn't get another Bible, what would yours be worth?

Fortunately, most people in America will never have to grapple with that question. Our deep-rooted heritage includes religious freedom and the economic opportunities to purchase most things in life.

But in much of the world, these are privileges people don't enjoy. In fact, as we enter the third millennium, more people than ever before have yet to see a copy of the Word of God. We are told that of our world's 6,809 known languages, only 405 have the complete Bible translated and printed. Another 1,034 have only the New Testament, leaving nearly 5,370 languages with less than the New Testament in written form.

For a person to have the Word of God in his language is perhaps the greatest blessing he can receive. That is the reason Bearing Precious Seed was established as the Bible publishing ministry of First Baptist Church in Milford, Ohio. Since 1973, this local church ministry has printed and distributed more than 45 million Bibles and Scripture portions in 42 languages.

Bearing Precious Seed's mission has always been to: Provide the Word of God ... at no profit ... to a world in desperate need ... through the local church. Since inception, Bearing Precious Seed has published the Word of God in 42 languages. English, French, Spanish, and Italian are perhaps the more popular, but the ministry's publishing ability ranges from Ukrainian to Arabic to Thai.

Where do all these Scriptures go? Almost daily, shipments leave Milford, Ohio and El Paso, Texas for destinations in Latin American, Europe, Africa, and Asia, where they are distributed under the auspices of local missionaries and Christian nationals.

In the U.S., there are seventeen missionary families who work closely with Bearing Precious Seed. Five are headquartered in El Paso, Texas, where Bearing Precious Seed has a complete printing operation that focuses on Spanish Scriptures for distribution in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Each year, hundreds of volunteers from church groups come to El Paso to coordinate Scripture distribution campaigns in Mexico.

Our other missionaries use Milford, Ohio, as a home base for extensive travels throughout the U.S. These men crisscross the nation to raise funds for the Bearing Precious Seed effort. They share the burden of getting churches re-involved in the Bible printing ministry.

The message has been warmly received. An increasing number of local church congregations are partnering with Bearing Precious Seed. Several hundred churches support BPS on a monthly basis as one of their missionary projects. Others are involved in National Bible Publishing Month each year to raise funds for paper. Many churches support the ministry both ways. There are also Seedline churches who work in cooperation with Bearing Precious Seed. They supply paper and the Milford print shop prints the Scriptures and returns the press sheets to these Seedline churches. The congregations volunteer their time to separate, collate, stitch and package these Scriptures. Presently, there are 87 Seedline churches.

For over 30 years Bearing Precious Seed has published and distributed God's Word in a manner that was sensitive and responsive to His leading. We have experienced the privilege of answered prayer and the joy of reaching out to neglected souls and putting a Bible in their hands.

But there's still a vast need for the Word of God, especially in today's climate of social, ethnic, and economic troubles. The Scriptures are an invaluable tool for hungry souls. Without the Word of God, missionaries are not nearly as effective. As the world becomes more literate in this age of communication and information, Bibles are needed for evangelism and discipleship.

Over the years, Bearing Precious Seed has been supported prayerfully and financially by churches, organizations, and individuals who are burdened for the world. Now more than ever, Bearing Precious Seed needs concerned Christians to pledge monthly funds or make a one-time sacrificial gift.

The need is evident. The harvest is abundant everywhere and Bearing Precious Seed fervently believes the best results are yet to be seen. Psalm 68:11 says, "The Lord gave the Word: great was the company of those that published it." Will you be a part of that company?
